The climbing sectors you can walk to from Massouri

No car, no bus timetable, no parking on the Armeos road. From an Ibiscus villa you can be at the base of Grande Grotta before your coffee is cold. This is the walking-distance map of Kalymnos, sector by sector, with the shade hours our guests actually use.

Odyssey sector above Massouri, Kalymnos

Why Massouri is the base, not just a village

Kalymnos has more than 3,500 bolted routes spread over sixty-odd sectors, but the ones climbers talk about β€” Grande Grotta, Panorama, Odyssey, Spartacus, Afternoon β€” hang directly above Massouri. The path to most of them starts at the top of the village, a few minutes uphill from our garden gate. That is the whole argument for staying here rather than in Pothia or by the ferry: you climb twice a day without a vehicle, swim in between, and never negotiate the Armeos parking scrum at 8am in October.

At a glance: walking time from Ibiscus

Times below are for an unhurried walk with a rope bag, from our gate. Grades are approximate ranges for the bulk of the routes; every sector has outliers. Shade hours shift with the season β€” they are given for the autumn peak (September to November).

Grande Grotta and Panorama β€” the postcard

The cave you have seen in every Kalymnos photo. Grande Grotta is a fifty-metre-deep amphitheatre of tufa columns, overhanging enough that rain is irrelevant and sun rarely reaches the rock. Routes start around 6a on the left and climb through the 7s to a wall of 8s on the right; the classic tick-list β€” DNA, Aegialis, Fun de Chichunne β€” is here. It is also the busiest sector on the island in October, so go at 8 or go at 4. Panorama is the vertical wall immediately to the right of the cave: longer, more technical, sunny until early afternoon. If the Grotta is a queue, walk fifty metres and climb Panorama's 6as with nobody below you. The approach for both is the same marked path from the top of Massouri; allow ten to fifteen minutes and a little breath β€” the last stretch is steep.

Odyssey β€” the summer sector

A wall of tufa pipes, stalactites and blue-grey limestone that goes into shade around one o'clock and stays there. Grades cluster between 6c and 8a with real rests in the tufa; it is the sector our summer guests climb at five in the afternoon after a day in the sea. Slightly further along the same hillside than the Grotta β€” count on twelve to fifteen minutes β€” and the base is spacious enough for a group with children and a picnic.

Kastelli, Poets and Afternoon β€” the friendly walls

Not everyone comes to project 8a. Kastelli is the low-angle seafront slab a few minutes from the village: warm rock by mid-morning, grades from 5a, a soft first day for cold fingers and nervous partners. Poets and Afternoon sit higher on the same slope, vertical and technical, with plenty of routes in the 5c to 6c band and shade from early afternoon. Between the three you can fill a week without ever needing to climb steep β€” and if you have never touched limestone, Poets is where it starts to make sense.

How to plan a day around the sun

Kalymnos faces west over Telendos, so the rule of thumb is: morning at sectors that face north or sit under a roof (Grande Grotta, Arhi, Spartacus), afternoon at the walls that catch the early sun and lose it after lunch (Panorama, Odyssey, Afternoon, Iliada). In October you can string two sessions together with a swim and a nap in between; in July you climb before nine, swim, sleep, and go back at five. Our balconies face the same sunset the walls do β€” you will see the shade line move up the hillside from your chair.

Beyond walking distance

With a scooter or a hire car the island opens up: Arginonta valley (twenty minutes by road, seven sub-sectors and a taverna at the bottom), Sikati cave for the hard crowd, Palace and Secret Garden for long shaded days, Sea Breeze at Emporios for cool afternoons in summer. None of them is more than forty minutes from Massouri. Most of our climbers do four or five days on foot above the village and rent a scooter for the other two.

Three things that keep the crags good

Bolts here are replaced by volunteers and paid for by donations β€” the Kalymnos rebolting projects run on climber money, so leave something in the box at the climbing shop. Carry your rubbish down, including tape. And the goats own the hillside: close the gates on the Armeos path behind you.

Ten minutes from the Grotta, fifty metres from the sea

Fourteen self-catering villas at the foot of the Massouri crags. Kitchens for recovery pasta, balconies for drying ropes, and a family that has watched the shade line move for four decades.
